Three more flyovers proposed on Mangaluru-Surathkal NH to tackle traffic congestion

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Nov 6: With the number of vehicles rising steadily on the Mangaluru–Goa National Highway (NH-66), the ministry of road transport and highways is reportedly considering the construction of three additional flyovers at Kottara Chowki, Kuloor, and Surathkal.

Mangaluru North MLA Y Bharath Shetty said he had submitted a proposal to the ministry seeking approvals for the flyovers. “The existing flyovers at Kottara Chowki, Kulur, and Surathkal allow only one-way traffic movement. All three locations fall within city limits, so additional flyovers are essential to ease traffic congestion on this busy national highway stretch,” he added.

The MLA explained that due to the lack of two-way flyovers, all vehicles, including heavy vehicles, are forced to move on city roads in a single direction, creating bottlenecks.

“Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta has also raised this demand with the union minister. The proposal is currently at the detailed project report (DPR) stage, according to NHAI officials,” Shetty said.

He added that NHAI will conduct a feasibility study to prepare the DPR, and fund allocation will be made based on the report. “Since this is an essential requirement, I will continue to push for it. I will meet the minister along with the MP to ensure the DPR is prepared at the earliest,” he said.

Currently, the Kottara Chowki flyover allows one-way traffic towards Goa, while the flyovers at Kulur and Surathkal cater to traffic heading towards Mangaluru. This arrangement, he noted, leads to congestion at all three busy locations.

I would have believed that this can happen, if Capt. Chowta had said it. Instead of multiple flyovers, What mangalore needs is a completely elevated 4 lane road from Surathkal to Ullal with entry and exits at KPT and Pumpwell. It also needs a ring road from Surathkal to Ullal side touching airport and the Bangalore highway on the way. I know none of this will happen in my life time, but hey, atleast i can pipedream!! The Kottara flyover is such an engineering masterpiece that, on the surathkal side, it ends in a junction with Kodikal cross road. Which Bharat ratna deserving engineer ends a flyover at a junction? Aren't flyovers built to bypass junctions!!

It’s time for the Karnataka stretch of NH-66 to be developed on the lines of Kerala’s model. Kerala managed to acquire just 45 metres of land and still built a 10-lane highway within that width. Since Karnataka has already acquired 60 metres, it can easily construct a similar high-capacity highway while providing wider, well-designed shoulders and better safety margins. If not full, atleast within the city limits of Mangalore, Udupi, Kundapur, Karwar etc

Currently there is just too much traffic on surathkal to bantwal road. We require additional lane for both sides. Best thing would be to make a raised flyover from surathkal to pumpwell, pumpwell to thokuttu and pumpwell to BC road with a 6 lanes(3 for each side). Planning anything other than this would not solve any current problem.

Anyone who has used the underpass from Pumpwell Circle to make a U-turn and go to Frs Mullers Hospital will know the chaos that our previous MP pumpwell kateel raja created. There is only a single underpass and traffic coming the wrong way. We do not need such pumpwell rajas to build flyovers for us that too taking more than 5 years, creating a swimming pool on one side...let the professionals handle the job....

It took 10 years. A work which should have noh taken more than a year. Everybody wants to inflate the bills, take as much kickbacks as possible by delaying a project.

I reiterate again that they should tunnel from near SKS to Sandesha in Tharethota, so the road above can be turned into 3 lanes each direction with a free 2 lane turn toward Nantoor Bangalore Road and a possible cloverleaf intersection in Nantoor. This will not only be future proof, it will have literally zero bottlenecks.

"Forethought and prudence are the proper qualities of a leader." Very much futuristic plan. Mangaluru is developing at a rapid pace, and today is the right opportunity to base tomorrows future.

It's a good move, Mr Shetty. My suggestion would be to complete the Nanthoor and Kulur bridge work before you start this project.

The highway shouldn’t pass through the city. Mangalore needs a proper bypass or elevated corridor from Yekkur to Surathkal. With the city being developed as the Silicon Beach of India, this is crucial for smooth traffic flow and sustainable urban growth.

Very much needed. Thanks for initiating this. Hope DPR done at the earliest, funds allocated and work completed at the earliest. Ideally when initially these 3 flyovers Kottara Chowki, Kulur, and Surathkal were done, it should have been done as 2 way. However, good its getting proposed now. Also BC Road flyover is also required to be done as 2 way. Hope they will consider this as well.

Good initiative but the question is when all these 6 flyovers will be completed and if the quality will be of international standard. I wonder if National Highway authorities have conducted a survey on the present and future traffic between Udupi and Talapady on this highway and prepared a master plan. Execution on an adhoc basis will not meet the citizens requirements. Yesterday I drove from Mangalore to Kasaragod. The road from Nanthoor to Talapady is absolutely of substandard quality. The moment we enter Kerala border, the quality of the same highway on Kerala side is very good. Is it Kerala Engineers and politicians responsible for this National Highway are doing an excellent job and Engineers and politician of DK and Udupi are not doing their job effectively?

The Talapady–Kasaragod stretch was built by a cooperative society, and its engineers and workers deserve credit for the excellent execution. The project was well planned and effectively implemented, with only minor shortcomings. In contrast, some other stretches of NH-66 in Kerala, handled by private companies, have not been executed as efficiently. One major issue in Mangaluru is the lack of public pressure—officials remain complacent because people stay silent. The recent High Court case in Kochi, Kerala, where a citizen challenged toll collection on a poorly maintained road, stands as a strong example of how ordinary citizens can demand accountability.
