Thrissur, Nov 7: Former Congress MLA Anil Akkara has landed in legal trouble after being booked by police for allegedly damaging a newly constructed road divider near Muthuvara Sri Mahadeva Temple in Thrissur district on Friday.
According to police sources, a case was registered based on a complaint filed by EKK Infrastructure, the contractor entrusted with the Public Works Department’s (PWD) road improvement project. The FIR mentions that the act caused a loss estimated at Rs 19,160 and was carried out with the intent to destroy public property.

The incident reportedly occurred after the PWD decided to close a U-turn on the Thrissur–Kuttippuram State Highway as part of an ongoing redevelopment initiative. The closure, officials said, was necessary to streamline traffic and prevent vehicles from straying into unsafe zones.
However, Akkara, expressing strong displeasure, arrived at the site, took a hammer from the workers, and allegedly broke the divider. The former MLA stated that the closure had caused severe inconvenience to devotees visiting the nearby temple from Thrissur and demanded an immediate reopening of the route.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) condemned Akkara’s action, terming it an act driven by “political vengeance.” The organisation has urged authorities to take strict action against those who damage public infrastructure under the guise of protest.
Police have begun further investigations into the incident.
