New Delhi, Nov 11: The massive car explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort on Monday evening has left nine people dead and 20 others injured, sending shockwaves across the capital. Among the seriously injured are 28-year-old Ankush Sharma and 20-year-old Rahul Kaushik, who were returning home after visiting the Gauri Shankar Temple in Shahdara.

The blast occurred around 6.52 pm when the duo stopped at a traffic signal near the Red Fort. The explosion ripped through a Hyundai i20, engulfing the area in flames. Ankush was thrown onto a nearby car, suffering severe burn injuries over 80 percent of his face and body, while Rahul fell on the road, sustaining serious injuries to his legs and body. His hair and ears were singed in the blast, his family said.

Despite his injuries, Rahul managed to take his friend Ankush to a nearby hospital before collapsing later at home. His condition deteriorated, and he was admitted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for further treatment.

Rahul’s mother, in tears, recounted the harrowing moments to NDTV. “He was very scared when he came home. He has injuries on his feet, hands, head, and ears. His hearing has been affected,” she said, pleading for government protection for her family.

Ankush’s sister-in-law said his face was “completely burnt” and that he would require plastic surgery. “Particles have accumulated all over his skin. This has been a huge shock for us. Despite all the security in Delhi, such a big blast took place. This is not a small matter and cannot be tolerated,” she said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that all possibilities are being explored and a thorough investigation is underway. “All options will be investigated immediately and we will present the results to the public. I will be heading to the spot shortly and will also visit the hospital,” he stated.

Authorities have cordoned off the area, and forensic teams are collecting evidence to determine the cause of the explosion, which has raised serious questions about security in the national capital.
