Centre enforces four labour codes; PM calls it ‘Landmark Reform Since Independence’

New Delhi, Nov 21: The Union government on Friday notified the implementation of the long-pending four Labour Codes, passed by Parliament in 2020, marking a major overhaul of India’s labour framework.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, announcing the move on X, described the rollout as “one of the most comprehensive and progressive labour-oriented reforms since Independence”. He said the new codes would “greatly empower workers” while easing compliance and promoting ‘Ease of Doing Business’. “Shramev Jayate!” he added.

Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also confirmed the implementation, stating, “From today, the new labour codes have been implemented in the country.” Calling the reforms a major pro-worker step, he said the Modi government was committed to ensuring dignity for every worker.

Mandaviya said the new labour codes guarantee appointment letters for youth, equal pay and respect for women, social security coverage for 40 crore workers, gratuity for fixed-term employees after one year, free annual health check-ups for workers above 40, double wages for overtime, and social justice aligned with international standards.

He added that these codes would give new momentum to the goal of a developed India by 2047 and are a significant step towards a self-reliant nation.
