Washington, Nov 22: US President Donald Trump warmly received incoming New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani at the White House on Friday, marking the first in-person meeting between the political rivals. The meeting, requested by Mamdani, focused on cost-of-living concerns and public safety in the city.
Despite months of media barbs and ideological clashes, the two leaders appeared to find common ground in the Oval Office. “We agreed on a lot more than I thought,” Trump said, adding, “We have one thing in common: we want this city of ours that we love to do very well.” Trump congratulated Mamdani on his recent electoral victory, calling it “an incredible race against some very tough people.”

Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist and state lawmaker, said the meeting was “productive,” centered on New York City’s affordability and shared admiration for the city. He added that he would work with Trump on initiatives benefiting New Yorkers, while opposing those that harm the city.
The mayor-elect, who will be sworn in on January 1 as New York’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor, highlighted his priorities, including housing, grocery, childcare, and transportation costs in a city of 8.5 million. Mamdani’s campaign, noted for its social media engagement, provoked national debate about Democratic strategies.
Trump, tempering previous harsh criticism of Mamdani, said he expected a civil discussion and praised Mamdani for a “successful run.” The president also emphasized that he and Mamdani share the goal of strengthening New York.
The White House meeting follows months of public exchanges, with Mamdani previously criticizing Trump’s policies on immigration and federal enforcement in the city. While the federal government provides $7.4 billion to New York City for fiscal year 2026, it remains unclear whether Trump could withhold any legally mandated funding.
Both leaders signaled a willingness to engage constructively despite past conflicts, setting the stage for cooperation on city-focused issues ahead of Mamdani’s inauguration.
