Chennai, Nov 24: A deep depression over the South Andaman Sea has continued to strengthen, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Weather officials on Monday indicated the system shows signs of further intensification, with the possibility of evolving into a cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal in the next 48 hours, potentially affecting the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts.
Simultaneously, another low-pressure area is expected to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal, likely moving west-northwest and consolidating into a well-marked low-pressure area before strengthening further.

Impact on Tamil Nadu and Puducherry:
• Schools and colleges closed in Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Nagapattinam, Karur, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchirappalli, Tiruvarur, Sivaganga, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, and Thoothukudi districts.
• Puducherry and Karaikal declared holidays for schools and colleges as a precaution.
• Heavy rainfall and waterlogging have disrupted road connectivity and reduced visibility in many areas.
Precautionary Measures:
• Fishermen advised not to venture into the sea.
• Disaster management teams are on alert for flooding and localised landslips.
• Residents urged to stay updated with official advisories as the weather systems persist.
Authorities expect wet conditions to continue over southern and delta districts for the next few days due to these twin weather systems in the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal.
