Coimbatore, Dec 1: A shocking incident in Coimbatore has sparked widespread outrage across Tamil Nadu after a woman from Tirunelveli was brutally hacked to death by her estranged husband inside a women’s hostel on Sunday.

The victim, identified as Sripriya, worked in a private firm in the city and had been living separately from her husband, Balamurugan, due to ongoing marital disputes. Police said the accused arrived at the hostel under the pretext of meeting her, hiding a sickle inside his clothes.

Investigators revealed that an argument broke out moments after they met. In a sudden and brutal assault, Balamurugan allegedly pulled out the sickle and hacked her to death. In a disturbing act, police said he then took a selfie with her body and uploaded it as his WhatsApp status, accusing her of “betrayal.”

Panic gripped the hostel as residents fled the scene. Balamurugan remained at the spot until police arrived and arrested him. The weapon has been seized, and preliminary investigations suggest he suspected his wife of being involved in another relationship.

The gruesome murder has intensified political tensions in Tamil Nadu. Opposition parties have accused the DMK government of failing to curb crime against women, citing a rise in violent offences. The government and police, however, assert that such cases stem from personal disputes and insist that swift action is being taken to ensure maximum punishment in every incident.
