Netanyahu seeks presidential pardon, says corruption trial hurting ability to govern

Daijiworld Media Network – Jerusalem

Jerusalem, Dec 1: In a dramatic development, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday formally requested a presidential pardon, arguing that his long-running corruption trial is obstructing his ability to effectively lead the country. Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, has consistently denied all charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust.

In a video statement released by the Likud Party, Netanyahu said, “My lawyers sent a request for pardon to the president today. I expect that anyone who wishes for the good of the country support this step.” His legal team emphasized that the prime minister still believes he will ultimately be “completely acquitted.”

Netanyahu, who has been on trial for five years, has made no admission of guilt. His lawyers argued that the president can exercise special intervention in cases involving broader public interest, claiming that halting the trial would help “heal divisions” and “strengthen national unity.”

However, the move has drawn sharp criticism. Opposition leader Yair Lapid said Netanyahu should not be granted a pardon without admitting guilt, expressing remorse, and retiring from political life. Traditionally, pardons in Israel are granted only after conviction, not during ongoing legal proceedings.

President Isaac Herzog’s office called the request “extraordinary” and said it carries “significant implications.” The office stated that the request will be reviewed responsibly and forwarded to the justice ministry’s pardons department for opinions before a recommendation is drafted.

Adding to the political weight, former U.S. President Donald Trump recently wrote to Herzog urging him to consider granting Netanyahu a pardon, calling the case a “political, unjustified prosecution.”

Israel’s Justice Minister Yariv Levin, a key Netanyahu ally, is seen as a significant figure in the unfolding process.

Netanyahu’s lawyers maintain that continued legal proceedings are deepening societal divisions and burdening the prime minister as he attempts to govern amid mounting national challenges.
