Moradabad, Dec 1: In a tragic incident, a 46-year-old booth-level officer (BLO) ended his life at his residence in Baheri village, allegedly due to severe work-related stress. The deceased, Sarvesh Singh, an assistant teacher posted at a school in Bhagatpur Tanda, had been assigned BLO duty for the first time on October 7.

According to police, Sarvesh’s wife Babli discovered him hanging in the storage room around 4 am on Sunday. A suicide note recovered from the scene revealed that Sarvesh felt “suffocated” and unable to cope with the workload. “BLO Sarvesh Singh has committed suicide and has left behind a suicide note stating he was unable to bear the burden of BLO duty. His body has been sent for post-mortem,” said Circle Officer (Thakurdwara) Ashish Pratap Singh.

Sarvesh is survived by his wife and four daughters.

The incident comes amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across several states, including Uttar Pradesh. The extensive exercise has reportedly placed immense pressure on government employees tasked with weeding out inaccuracies and updating voter lists.

Just a day earlier, another BLO, 42-year-old Anuj Garg from Rajasthan’s Dholpur, collapsed and died at home while uploading voter data. His family alleged that he had been working under extreme pressure.

The repeated incidents have raised serious concerns about the workload and mental stress faced by BLOs during the massive electoral roll revision drive.
