Udupi, Dec 3: The SODE Group of Institutions, Udupi, has appointed Dr Nagaraj Bhat as the new principal of Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management (SMVITM), Bantakal, an autonomous institution affiliated to VTU, Belagavi.
Dr Nagaraj Bhat has served in multiple leadership roles at SMVITM over the last 11 years, including professor, head of the department of Computer Science & Engineering, and dean (academics). He has contributed extensively to academic reforms, quality enhancement, and student-centric initiatives. With 14 years of rich experience in teaching, research, and academic administration, he is widely respected for his disciplined leadership, innovative academic practices, and commitment to institutional growth.
Dr Nagaraj Bhat holds a PhD in Weather Informatics from VTU and has completed post-doctoral research at the University of Alabama, USA. His international research exposure includes significant contributions to climate analytics, remote sensing, and environmental modelling.
He has authored several research papers, contributed patents and articles, and successfully secured VGST and VTU-funded research grants. He is the recipient of prestigious young scientist travel grants from the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to attend international symposiums in Germany and Brazil.
The leadership transition ceremony was held on November 28, in the presence of Rathna Kumar, secretary, SSVMET, Udupi, and Dr Radhakrishna S Aithal, CEO, SODE Group of Institutions. During the event, Dr Sudarshan Rao K, professor of mechanical engineering at SMVITM, was appointed as the new dean (academics).
Addressing the gathering, Rathna Kumar emphasised the importance of mutual respect and continuity in institutional values during leadership transitions. He congratulated Dr Nagaraj Bhat on assuming charge as principal, praising his academic achievements, international exposure, research leadership, and long-standing dedication to student development. He expressed confidence that Dr Nagaraj Bhat’s vision and experience will steer SMVITM toward new milestones in academic excellence and research innovation.
The management also recognised the exceptional service of Dr Thirumaleshwara Bhat, who served as principal for more than 10 years, shaping the institution with a strong focus on academic excellence, holistic learning, and community development.
