Ajman: National Conference on Sports Medicine Held at Gulf Medical University

Ajman, Feb 19: “There is a huge potential to develop the area of Sports Medicine in the region”, felt Prof Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Professor and Dean, Faculty of Sports Medicine and Physiotherapy, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Secretary General, Asian Federation of Sports Medicine.

Prof Sandhu delivered a keynote lecture on Sports Medicine and Sports Injuries at the National Conference on Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation held at Gulf Medical University, Ajman.

He also mentioned that the sports industry is booming into a million dollar industry in the near future. Considering this he has hinted that all professionals related to sports participants and their performance should upgrade their skills and knowledge to meet the future demand.

Major Abduladheem Kamkar, Head of Physiotherapy Section, Department of Medical Services, Dubai Police and Chairman, Emirates Physiotherapy Society, UAE emphasized on the special role and its contribution of the physical therapy profession and the physical therapists in particular in intervening and optimizing the athlete’s performance levels both in a non-injury and a post injury scenario. He also advised all the attending Physiotherapists that those working in the area of sports need to acquire special skills to rehabilitate athletes to optimize their performance.

Dr Harold Vanderschmid, Specialist Orthopedic Surgeon, American Hospital, Dubai, UAE delivered a lecture on Surgical Intervention in Sports Injuries. “Minimal invasive reconstruction techniques can deliver good anatomical restoration, good aesthetic results and allow earlier return to sports. Special rehabilitation protocols play an important role in the treatment of acute sports injuries” explained Dr Vanderschmid.

Dr William Murrell, Consultant Orthopaedic Sports, Dubai Bone and Joint Center, UAE focused on the advances in arthroscopy that have changed the face of sport, and the burgeoning technologies that will take us into the 22nd century and beyond.

Prof Kisan Patond, Professor and Head Department of Orthopedics, GMC Hospital Ajman delivered a lecture on Medical management of sports injuries. He said that the medical management of sports injuries ranges from initial phase application of PRICE, and TOTAPS regimes to different medications to minimize the effects of injuries.

While interacting with the media Prof Sandhu expressed his desire to enter into a MOU with GMU as academic partner to start Masters in Sports Medicine. He also disclosed that he is keen to start a Wellness Clinic in Body and Soul Health Clubs especially for the sportsmen.

Thumbay Moideen, Founder President of Thumbay Group, UAE assured that Thumbay Group will explore all the possibilities of working as partners to start the proposed Masters in Sports Medicine as well as the Wellness Clinic for the health clubs.

Over 250 professionals, physiotherapists, orthopedic surgeons and officials and members of various sports federations and clubs attended the conference.

The Conference was accredited by the Ministry of Health, UAE for 6 CME hours.
