Washington, Dec 6: The footballing world is set for a thrilling spectacle in 2026 as FIFA unveiled the official groups for the historic 48-team World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada from June 11 to July 19 next year.

Global superstars Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland are poised for a high-voltage showdown after France and Norway were drawn together in Group I, along with Senegal and a Play-off qualifier — promising one of the most eagerly awaited clashes in the league stage itself.

Defending champions Argentina, led by Lionel Messi’s successors, find themselves in Group J with Austria, Algeria and Jordan — while Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, placed in Group K with Colombia, Uzbekistan and a Play-off winner, remain well on course for a possible knockout showdown with Argentina, sparking hopes of another blockbuster rivalry in the twilight of the legend’s career.

With 48 nations competing for the first time, the upcoming edition marks the biggest World Cup in history. Hosts USA, Mexico and Canada were pre-assigned to Groups D, A and B respectively as per tournament rules.

Portugal talisman Cristiano Ronaldo, who had earlier faced a suspension, is now set to be available right from the national team’s opener after the remaining ban was deferred, ensuring full participation on the grand stage.

Adding to the significance of the event, FIFA President Gianni Infantino bestowed the inaugural “FIFA Peace Prize” upon US President Donald Trump during the draw ceremony, acknowledging political efforts said to have contributed to global peace initiatives.
