Kansas City, Dec 16: Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has successfully undergone surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee after suffering a season-ending injury during the Chiefs’ loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on December 14. Subsequent medical evaluations revealed that Mahomes had also torn his lateral collateral ligament (LCL), adding complexity to his recovery.
NFL insiders confirmed that while the Chiefs officially announced only the ACL surgery, the LCL injury was also addressed during the procedure performed by Dr. Daniel Cooper in Dallas. The Chiefs said Mahomes will begin his rehabilitation immediately.

Medical experts note that while LCL injuries generally heal within a few weeks, an ACL tear typically requires a recovery period of around nine months. This timeline is expected to allow Mahomes to return in time for the start of the 2026 NFL season.
Following the surgery, Mahomes expressed gratitude to fans for their support and said he remains determined to return stronger. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid also voiced confidence in the quarterback’s recovery, citing successful comebacks by other players with similar injuries.
