Supreme Court transfers RG Kar Medical College trainee doctor case to Calcutta High Court

New Delhi, Dec 17: The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the transfer of the RG Kar Medical College trainee doctor rape and murder case to the Calcutta High Court. The top court had taken suo motu cognisance of the case in 2024 following nationwide outrage over the incident.

A bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and Satish Chandra Sharma directed that all case papers be forwarded to the Calcutta High Court. Additionally, the court instructed that a copy of the status report be provided to the victim’s parents.

The postgraduate trainee doctor’s body was discovered in the hospital’s seminar room on August 9 last year. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested by Kolkata Police the following day. On January 20, a Kolkata trial court sentenced Roy to life imprisonment till death.

The incident had triggered widespread protests across West Bengal and sparked national outrage. Even after the primary conviction, the Supreme Court has continued to monitor related issues, including the regularisation of unauthorised absences among doctors.

Earlier, on August 20 last year, the bench had constituted a National Task Force (NTF) to develop a protocol ensuring the safety and security of medical professionals in the wake of the crime.
