Delhi, Dec 20: Delhi Police has arrested a 31-year-old man, T Sarath Kumar from Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, in connection with the theft of jewellery worth around ?1 crore from a car parked in Karol Bagh on Nov 14. Kumar is linked to the notorious interstate ‘Thak-Thak’ gang, known for smashing car windows in busy commercial areas to steal valuables.

According to police, the victim — a jewellery trader — had collected 62 pieces of gold and diamond jewellery along with grading certificates from an IGI lab and parked his car near Durga Park. On returning, he found the right-side window smashed and the jewellery bag missing.

After registering an FIR at Karol Bagh police station, the crime branch took over the investigation. CCTV footage and questioning of known offenders led investigators to a Trichy-based gang active across Delhi-NCR and other cities. The accused was tracked to Nizamuddin, where police laid a trap and arrested him on Dec 15.

Jewellery worth around ?35 lakh has been recovered from Kumar. Police revealed that he is a proclaimed offender in four theft cases in Delhi and is involved in at least eight criminal cases across the city. Kumar and his associates reportedly travel from Tamil Nadu to Delhi and other states, scouting busy markets to target vehicles left unattended.

DCP (Crime) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav said, “This arrest highlights our continued focus on dismantling interstate gangs that target Delhi’s commercial hubs.”
