Guwahati, Dec 20: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the new Terminal-2 building of Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in Assam’s Guwahati, marking a major milestone in strengthening aviation infrastructure in the Northeast.
The newly inaugurated terminal, built at a cost of around Rs 4,000 crore, is designed to handle approximately 13.1 million passengers annually. The Prime Minister also took a tour of the state-of-the-art facility during the inauguration.

According to officials, the total project cost stands at Rs 5,000 crore, of which Rs 1,000 crore has been earmarked for the development of Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities. With the addition of the new terminal, Guwahati airport is set to emerge as a key aviation hub not only for Assam but for the entire Northeast region.
Officials said the design of the terminal draws inspiration from Assam’s rich cultural heritage and biodiversity. Spread across an area of 1.40 lakh square metres, the terminal reflects local art and architectural elements.
Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport is named after Assam’s first Chief Minister. As part of the programme, Prime Minister Modi also unveiled an 80-foot statue of Gopinath Bardoloi outside the airport premises.
Earlier, on Friday, the Prime Minister shared glimpses of the new terminal on X (formerly Twitter), describing it as a “major boost to Assam’s infrastructure.”
“Increased capacity means better ‘Ease of Living’ and a boost for commerce as well as tourism,” he wrote.
Meanwhile, PM Modi said that on Sunday, December 21, he will pay floral tributes at the Shaheed Smarak Sthal, dedicated to the martyrs of the historic Assam Movement. He will later visit Namrup in Dibrugarh district to attend the groundbreaking ceremony of the Ammonia-Urea Fertiliser Project of Assam Valley Fertiliser and Chemical Company Limited.
Calling it an important initiative, the Prime Minister said the project would help meet the fertiliser requirements of Assam and other states, reduce imports, and strengthen the country’s self-reliance.
