Kolkata, Dec 21: The West Bengal Police on Saturday urged the public not to be misled by rumours and misinformation, stating that some groups are attempting to falsely link a recent killing in Bangladesh with an unrelated incident in Murshidabad district that occurred nearly eight months ago.
In a statement posted on its official X handle, the police said such comparisons are misleading, provocative, and aimed at disturbing public order.
The police clarified that efforts are being made to draw an improper parallel between the killing of Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh and the deaths of Haragobindo Das and his son Chandan Das in Murshidabad earlier this year. According to the police, these attempts are factually incorrect and risk fuelling communal tension.

Providing details of the Murshidabad case, the police said swift action had been taken, with 13 accused arrested and a strong charge sheet filed. Authorities added that the case is currently under judicial process and a verdict is expected soon.
“Linking the Murshidabad incident with events in Bangladesh is a deliberate attempt to spread communal mistrust, despite the fact that the law is taking its due course,” the police said.
The clarification comes amid unrest in Bangladesh following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a youth leader associated with the country’s 2024 pro-democracy movement, who passed away at a hospital in Singapore. His death triggered large-scale protests in Dhaka, during which incidents of violence and arson were reported. A Hindu youth was also killed during the unrest, further escalating tensions.
The West Bengal Police cautioned against circulating unverified or inflammatory content related to these developments and reiterated their commitment to preserving communal harmony in the state.
“We are closely monitoring social media platforms for the spread of provocative misinformation. Strict legal action will be taken against those attempting to communalise criminal incidents. Citizens are advised not to believe or share rumours,” the police said.
