New Delhi, Dec 21: A man was allegedly attacked with a broken beer bottle following a scuffle with three intoxicated youths at a park in Delhi’s Karol Bagh area, police said on Sunday, adding that a barcode on the bottle proved crucial in cracking the case.
The incident took place at Ajmal Khan Park on December 15, when the victim was shooting reels with a friend. According to police, three unknown men were consuming alcohol nearby and allegedly began misbehaving with them.

“When the complainant objected to their conduct, a heated argument broke out, which soon escalated into violence. One of the accused broke a beer bottle and struck the complainant on the head with the sharp glass, causing grievous injuries,” a senior police officer said.
The injured man was rushed to a nearby hospital in Karol Bagh, where he underwent treatment and survived the attack. Based on his complaint, police registered an FIR under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including attempt to murder.
Considering the seriousness of the offence and the rising incidents of violence in public places, a special police team was constituted to investigate the case. During a detailed inspection of the crime scene, police recovered a broken piece of the beer bottle allegedly used in the assault.
Significantly, the bottle fragment bore a barcode, which turned out to be a vital forensic clue. Using the barcode, investigators traced the source of the bottle by visiting nearby liquor vends. CCTV footage from the identified wine shop and surrounding areas was analysed, leading police to a scooter suspected to have been used by the accused.
Further scrutiny of CCTV footage from nearby locations helped establish the identities of the suspects. Acting swiftly, police apprehended three accused — Hammad alias Rizwan (22), Kamran alias Sarim (24) and Farzan (24) — on December 18, within 72 hours of the incident.
“During interrogation, all three accused confessed to their involvement. They stated that the altercation began when they asked the complainant for a matchbox, which he refused. The accused then checked his pockets, leading to a confrontation that escalated,” the officer said.
Police further revealed that Hammad, a resident of the Bada Hindu Rao area, is a history-sheeter with around 20 FIRs registered against him.
