Nizamabad, Dec 22: A 28-year-old man was arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district for allegedly impersonating a police sub-inspector, fraudulently marrying a woman and extorting lakhs of rupees in dowry and on false promises of a police job, officials said.

The accused, identified as Pradeep Yadav, a resident of Madna village under Ahraula police station limits, was nabbed on Saturday from the Nizamabad area. Police recovered a sub-inspector’s uniform, a fake identity card, forged appointment and joining letters, and several other fabricated documents from his possession.

Circle Officer Sadar Astha Jaiswal said a woman from Mithanpur Hadi Ali village had lodged a complaint alleging that Yadav married her on February 16, 2022, claiming to be a PAC constable and sub-inspector. She alleged that around ?8 lakh in cash, gold ornaments and household items were given as dowry at the time of marriage.

The victim further alleged that after marriage, Yadav and his family demanded additional dowry and a vehicle, subjecting her to harassment. He also allegedly took another ?1 lakh from her by falsely promising selection in the 2023 Uttar Pradesh Sub-Inspector recruitment, claiming the money was required for medical examination expenses.

Investigations revealed that the accused had no links with the police department, the officer said. Based on the complaint, a case was registered at Nizamabad police station under Sections 85, 205, 318(4), 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 3/4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Police said that on December 20, they received information that Yadav was attempting to threaten the victim, following which he was arrested. Additional sections including 204, 319(2), 338, 336(3) and 340(2) of the BNS were later added to the case.

During interrogation, Yadav reportedly confessed, admitting that he forged identity cards and appointment letters out of greed. He claimed to have misled his wife and in-laws by posing as a constable and later as a sub-inspector, and told them he was posted at Colonelganj police station in Prayagraj.

Police said the accused lived in a rented room in Prayagraj and sustained himself by cheating people while wearing a police uniform. Further investigation is underway.
