CM to Attend M'lore Varsity Convocation, Honorary Doctorates for Three

Mangalore, Feb 22: This is a rare occasion - the chief minister taking part in the convocation of Mangalore University.
The 30th annual convocation of Mangalore University will be presided over by CM Sadananda Gowda at the Mangala Auditorium, Mangalagangothri here on Thursday February 23.
This ‘opportunity’ is come to the hands of the CM, as currently he is also the in-charge for education ministry after the demise of higher education minister Dr V S Acharya.
Informing the same to reporters at a press conference held on Wednesday February 22, Prof T C Shivashankar Murthy, vice-chancellor of Mangalore University said that on the convocation day, honorary doctorates (honoris causa) will be given to three eminent personalities namely Dr Srikumar Banergy (science and technology), Dr Govinda Rao Marapalli (education), Yerya Laxminarayana Alva (literature and social service). The doctorate is conferred on the aforesaid personalities as per the unanimous decision of the syndicate, he said.
"Out of the total 26,222 candidates who appeared for the examinations, 17,271 passed. As far as PG courses are concerned, out of 2,984 candidates who appeared, 2732 passed. Out of the 23,154 UG students who appeared, 14,460 cleared and out of the 23 PG diploma candidates, 18 passed," he said.
Out of the 17,271 candidates that passed, 1,411 (PhD - 43, MPhil -17, PG -182, UG - 1169) will receive their degrees in person.
The university will also award 44 doctorate degrees (arts - 13, science - 26, commerce - 5). There will be 35 gold medals and 57 cash prizes, and 62 ranks including 44 in PG, 18 in UG, 12 in arts, 33 in science and technology, 9 in commerce, 3 in law, 3 in education and 2 in PG diploma.
This year two additional gold medals will be conferred, one each for MCJ and MBA post graduate achievers, he informed, adding that the medals have been sponsored by Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr Veerendra Heggade.
Dr Srikumar Banerjee, chairman, atomic energy commission and secretary to government of India, department of atomic energy will be the chief guest and deliver the convocation address.
Prof K Chinnappa Gowda, registrar among others were present at the press meet.
