Bijapur security forces thwart Maoist attack by neutralising 10-kg IED in Munga-Peddakorma

Raipur/Bijapur, Dec 29: In a significant anti-Maoist operation, a joint team of Bijapur District Reserve Guard, Gangaloor Police personnel, and the Bomb Disposal Squad successfully detected and neutralised a 10-kilogram improvised explosive device (IED) planted by Maoists in the Munga-Peddakorma area on Monday.

The operation, conducted early morning, was part of ongoing efforts to secure vulnerable routes and villages in the dense forests of Bijapur, one of the worst-affected districts in Chhattisgarh’s long-standing battle against Left-Wing Extremism.

During routine demining and area clearance along a footpath near Munga road, the team identified a pressure-activated IED buried strategically to target passing security patrols or civilian vehicles. Following strict safety protocols, the Bomb Disposal Squad neutralised the device on-site, averting a potentially catastrophic attack.

Weighing 10 kilograms, the IED had the capacity to cause extensive destruction, underscoring the persistent threat posed by Maoists, who continue to employ such tactics to disrupt development and intimidate local communities.

Officials praised the vigilance and coordination of the joint team, highlighting that the timely detection prevented loss of life and protected ongoing peace-building efforts. IEDs in the region are often planted along critical paths used by security forces during road construction projects or village outreach initiatives.

The operation reflects the growing momentum of anti-Maoist campaigns in Chhattisgarh. Recent weeks have seen frequent recoveries of explosives and insurgent caches, with forward operating camps and intensified patrols helping security forces dominate areas previously under insurgent control. These measures are facilitating infrastructure development and encouraging tribal communities to reject violence.

Search operations continue in the Munga-Peddakorma area to uncover any additional traps or hideouts. Authorities believe sustained vigilance will further weaken Maoist logistics and morale, paving the way for lasting peace and accelerated development in the region.

This follows similar success on Sunday in nearby Kandlaparti, where another IED was neutralised and a cache of materials seized, demonstrating continued pressure on Maoist cadres operating in small, isolated groups.
