Kolkata, Jan 1: A senior youth functionary of the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district was allegedly killed on New Year’s Eve, triggering shock and tension in the area. Police recovered the body of the leader, identified as Nabyendu Ghosh, from the Milanpara locality near Mohanbati market in Raiganj on Thursday morning.
Ghosh had only recently been appointed as the district youth vice-president of the Trinamool Congress in Uttar Dinajpur, making the incident particularly disturbing for party members and local residents alike. Police officials have launched an investigation to determine whether the killing was politically motivated or the result of some other dispute.

The 37-year-old leader, who was divorced and a father of one child, had recently started a sweet shop close to the Mohanbati market. According to initial accounts, a New Year’s Eve picnic was being organised on Wednesday night directly opposite his shop, and Ghosh was present at the gathering.
Witnesses from the area alleged that a group of unidentified individuals arrived suddenly on motorcycles during the celebrations. In the confusion that followed, Ghosh was attacked. He collapsed on the road and was found critically injured as the attackers fled the scene. He was later taken to Raiganj Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Hospital authorities subsequently informed his family.
One of the puzzling aspects of the case is that it remains unclear who transported Ghosh to the hospital, as no close associates or companions were found with him at the time. This has added another layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation.
Raiganj Superintendent of Police Sonawane Kuldip Suresh said the police have sealed off the picnic site and the area behind the shop located opposite it. “We have cordoned off the spot and begun a detailed investigation. Local residents are being questioned, and all possible angles are being examined,” he told reporters.
It has also emerged that Ghosh had earlier been associated with student politics and had served as the general secretary of the student council at Raiganj College. Reacting to the incident, Trinamool Congress district president Kanaia Lal Agarwal said he had urged the police to act swiftly. “I have requested the Superintendent of Police to ensure that those responsible are arrested within 24 hours and are given strict punishment,” he said.
At present, the motive behind the killing remains uncertain. Investigators are exploring multiple possibilities, including political rivalry, business-related disputes linked to the recently opened shop, and potential personal issues. Police officials have stated that no angle has been ruled out and that further clarity is expected as the investigation progresses.
