Brahmavar: Distortion of news is a threat to media world, says Jayaprakash Hegde

Brahmavar, Jan 5: "News published in the media remains as a permanent record, and if mistakes occur, correcting them is not easy. Therefore, the mindset of distorting news poses a serious threat to the media world. Writing must be responsible and based on facts," said former minister K Jayaprakash Hegde.

He was speaking at the Vaddarse Raghurama Shetty Journalism Award presentation ceremony, organised under the aegis of the Brahmavar Taluk Journalists’ Association, held on January 4 at the Coastal Paradise Anugraha Hall, Pandeshwar, Sasthana.

Inaugurating the programme, MLA Kiran Kumar Kodgi said that journalism enjoys great respect in society and those working in this field must therefore function with responsibility.

On the occasion, the Vaddarse Raghurama Shetty Journalism Award was presented to senior journalist Chidambara Baikampady, a close associate of Vaddarse.

Receiving the award, Baikampady said that his association with Vaddarse was like attending a university of learning. He recalled Vaddarse’s deep concern for the poor and the underprivileged, and his immense commitment to social transformation. Receiving an award instituted in his name was a matter of great honor for him, he said, while also sharing memories of “Mungaru.”

Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna extended his greetings on the occasion.

The programme was presided over by Rajesh Ganiga Achladi, president of the Taluk Journalists’ Association.

Those honoured on the occasion included Chittooru Prabhakara Acharya, elected as District Association vice-president; Praveen Muddoor and Mohan Udupa, elected to the district association executive committee.

The association’s founder-president Chittooru Prabhakara Acharya welcomed the gathering. Vasanth Giliyaru, gave an introductory note. Chandrashekhara Beejadi, vice-president, compered the programme, and Harish Kiran Tunga, general secretary, delivered the vote of thanks.

The event was also attended by B Bhujanga Shetty, convenor of Brahmavar Buntara Sangha; Astro Mohan, district representative of the Karnataka Working Journalists’ Association; Neelavara Surendra Adiga, president of the District Unit of Kannada Sahitya Parishat; Nagaraj Rayappanamath, president of the Kundapura Working Journalists’ Association and others.
