Mumbai, Jan 11: London-based doctor and YouTuber Sangram Patil was briefly detained by the Mumbai crime branch at the city’s international airport on Saturday in connection with a defamation case filed by BJP media cell functionary Nikhil Bhamre, police said.

A senior police official said Patil was served a notice under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which allows authorities to issue an appearance notice instead of making an arrest in cases involving offences with shorter jail terms. Officials clarified that Patil was not arrested.

Patil and his wife were questioned by the police after their arrival from London and were released following a preliminary inquiry, the official added.

According to the complaint, Patil allegedly circulated false information about the ruling party and made derogatory remarks against its leaders. Police said further investigation is underway.
