Mangaluru, Jan 13: Kavoor police have taken three persons into custody in connection with a case in which a migrant worker from Jharkhand was allegedly abused, assaulted and an attempt was made on his life after accusing him of being a Bangladeshi national.
The accused have been identified as Ratheesh Das alias Lalu (32), Dhanush (24) and Sagar (24), all residents of Kulur village in Mangaluru taluk, police said.
According to the police complaint, on January 11 at around 6.05 pm, four accused allegedly stopped Diljan Ansari, a migrant worker from Jharkhand, questioned him about whether he was a Hindu or a Muslim, and subjected him to communal abuse. They allegedly accused him of being a Bangladeshi, hurled obscene abuses and assaulted him using a metal rod, allegedly attempting to kill him.

Following the incident, a case was registered on January 12 at the Kavoor police station under Crime No. 03/2026, invoking Sections 126(2), 352, 351(3), 353, 109, 118(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
In connection with the case, police traced and apprehended three of the accused on Monday.
Further investigation is underway, police added.
