Udupi, Jan 14: The long-pending demand of passengers at Udupi railway station has finally been fulfilled. Passenger amenities constructed at a cost of around Rs 2.40 crore were inaugurated on January 14 with the support of the district administration.

Under the Amrit Bharat Railway Station Scheme, Udupi Railway Station has received a complete makeover and will now serve the people of the coastal region with a modern and upgraded look, said Udupi–Chikkamagaluru Member of Parliament Kota Srinivas Poojary, after inaugurating the passenger facilities constructed by Konkan Railway Corporation Limited at the station premises.

Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnav has approved works worth Rs 100 crore for upgrading railway stations across the coastal districts. As part of the first phase, Platform Number 2 will be developed at a cost of Rs 2.6 crore, with three lifts installed for the convenience of senior citizens.

The Barkur–Mulki railway platforms will be upgraded at a cost of Rs 4.28 crore. In the current financial year, the Centre is expected to approve development works at 10 railway stations at a total cost of Rs 105 crore, MP Kota Srinivas Poojary said.

MP Poojary further stated that double-tracking the railway line from Mangaluru to Karwar has become an urgent necessity, and a detailed project report in this regard will be submitted to the union minister. He also proposed extending the Madgaon–Mangaluru Vande Bharat train up to Mumbai and the Bengaluru–Mangaluru train up to Karwar, which would greatly benefit the people of the coastal region.

“Discussions will be held with Konkan Railway to resolve obstacles. Efforts will also be made to rename Udupi Railway Station as ‘Sri Krishna Railway Station’,” he added.

The inauguration was attended by MLA Yashpal A Suvarna, MLA Gurme Suresh Shetty, Konkan Railway chairman and managing director Santosh Kumar Jha, Karwar divisional railway manager Asha Shetty, and others.
