Daijiworld Media Network – Puttur (SP)

Puttur, Feb 25: A couple hired a lodge in Uppinangady near here and consumed poison, allegedly due to frustration over protracted opposition faced from their families for their plan to get married.

While Balakrishna Gowda (24), son of Dombaiah Gowda from Parari in Mogru village, Beltangady taluk, died as a result, Ashwini (20), from Arasinamakki village survived. However, her condition continues to be precarious.

Although the two are distant relatives and both the families know each other well, there had been dogged opposition to their love affair. Balakrishna worked as a truck driver.

The lovers hired a room in a lodge in Uppinangady a couple of days back. On Friday morning, both consumed soft drinks laced with poisonous substance. While Balakrishna Gowda breathed his last on the spot, Ashwini, who was found in a critical condition, was admitted into a hospital in Puttur by Uppinangady policemen.

In a suicide note, the couple said they had got married three days back, and had taken a decision to end their lives because of stiff opposition to their marriage. They requested the family members to conduct their funerals together.

A case was registered in this respect in Uppinangady police station.
