Patna, Jan 17: Senior leaders of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Saturday staged a strong protest against the Bihar government over the suspicious death of a NEET aspirant in Patna, calling for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the case.
A party delegation led by former MLA Sanjeev Kumar met Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Kartikeya Sharma to convey its concern and anger over the incident. The leaders alleged that the safety of young women in the state has been severely compromised and accused the administration of trying to dilute or suppress the case.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Sanjeev Kumar said the party had lost confidence in the local police. “We have absolutely no faith in the police administration. Had the police been serious about a fair investigation, strict action would have been taken from the very beginning,” he said.
He alleged that the probe was being deliberately misdirected and maintained that justice could not be ensured without handing the case over to the CBI.
The RJD leaders also strongly objected to the police’s initial assertion that the student had died due to food poisoning. Kumar questioned how such a conclusion could be drawn even before the post-mortem report was released.
“How did the police suddenly become forensic experts? This looks like a pre-planned attempt to protect influential people involved in the case,” he alleged.
Expanding the issue beyond the specific incident, Kumar raised serious concerns about the regulation and safety standards of private girls’ hostels in Patna. He demanded that all such hostels be compulsorily registered with the district administration and that CCTV surveillance systems be linked directly to police headquarters for effective monitoring.
He said these concerns had also been raised with the Bihar Director General of Police (DGP), adding that the party expects concrete corrective steps in the near future.
The RJD maintained that the case is not just about one student’s death but reflects a larger issue of dignity, safety, and justice for economically weaker families in Bihar. Kumar alleged that the victim’s family lacked influence, while the accused were powerful, which he claimed explained the police’s “indifferent attitude.”
He further warned that the issue could escalate politically. Kumar said Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav has indicated that if swift action is not taken, the culprits are not punished, and the case is not transferred to the CBI, the RJD will launch a statewide agitation.
