Mangaluru, Feb 4: A young woman was killed when a private bus struck a scooter and ran over her near Nanthoor Circle in Mangaluru on Wednesday, February 4, in the evening, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Deepthi (26), a resident of Ballalbagh. She was riding as a pillion passenger with her fiancé, Kishore (32), on a scooter travelling from Shivabhag towards Vamanjoor.

According to authorities, at around 7:45 pm, near the Nanthoor bus stop, a private bus bearing registration KA-19 D-5868 and travelling from Kadri Shivabhag towards Nanthoor, collided with the scooter from behind.

The impact caused the pillion rider to fall onto the road. The bus then ran over her abdomen, inflicting severe injuries. Deepthi was rushed to A J Hospital, but succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival. Kishore, the scooter rider, narrowly escaped unhurt.

The accident occurred in front of the Nanthoor bus stand and involved a route number 22 private bus bound for Kudupu. It is not yet clear whether the bus was speeding or if the scooter suddenly veered into its path. Investigations are ongoing.

A case has been registered at the Kadri Traffic police station. It was also reported that the couple was on their way to a birthday party in Vamanjoor at the time of the tragic accident.

Every time I see two - wheelers , I get scared for them. The way they just cut in front of big vehicles and cars is really madness. No wonder they are dying like ants. Each time there is a block they come from all sides and make the situation even more worse. They need to learn to drive by the rules.

Yesterday morning I was witness to bus rashly driving and hitting car in kankanady even as signal was orange! All users are not following rules in mlr but biggest danger are buses and private heavy vehicles over speeding!

RIP! Chaotic roads, signals, and reckless driving, especially by private buses; two wheelers are at the highest risk of perishing!! Sorry state of affairs in a so called Smart City! 😞

speed limit and tracking of overspeeding of buses would be a great start. Makes me wonder why these old models of buses still are allowed to run. these have high blind spot issues.

May the departed soul achieve Sadgati. The traffic at nanthoor has become too much. I do not hear of any study done as to why it is so. Some Engg colleges should depute students to do some projects on this issue. When the root cause is found out, a solution could be implemented to solve this matter. By random names as Flyover, underpass, overpass etc. wont solve the matter. A highway bypass and widening of several arterial roads to go from bikarnkatte side to kadri side and kottatara side to ullal side will only solve the matter. Hope some town planning experts will look into the matter and come out with a solution.

We cannot blame heavy vehicles for every accident. The way 2 wheeler riders are rising in Mangalore there are no rules and regulations are followed specially when taking turns and while adjoining the roads, they never turn their head to look for a incoming traffic from main road. Even I have a 2 wheeler also. I take these precautions bcoz for my family

The Nanthoor bus stop is a very dangerous spot. Private buses are at racing mode, there is no system once the buses come from Kadri. There should be a bay for the buses to stop. May the innocent soul rest in peace. Authorities please ban the private bus lobby.
