New York, Feb 6: US retail major Walmart has announced a significant pay hike for thousands of employees in its pharmacy division, promoting 3,000 pharmacy technicians to newly created operations team lead positions with higher wages and added responsibilities.
In a statement, the company said the promoted associates will now earn $28 per hour, up from $22 earlier. Depending on location, their earnings could go up to $42 per hour, excluding bonuses. In addition, eligible employees may receive location-based bonus pay.

Walmart said the move is part of its broader investment to strengthen local pharmacy teams and improve customer healthcare services across its nearly 4,600 stores nationwide.
“To support these associates and the essential role they play in customers’ health and wellness nationwide, we are expanding our investment in our local pharmacy teams by creating new leadership roles and increasing hourly earning potential for thousands of associates,” the company said.
The retail giant also announced that pharmacy technicians, who currently earn an average of $22 an hour, will now be eligible for wages of up to $40.50 per hour. Operations team leads will assist pharmacy managers and pharmacists in overseeing daily operations and supporting patient care.
Explaining the rationale behind the hike, Walmart said it is expanding staffing as it ramps up digital health initiatives such as Better Care Services, access to Eli Lilly’s LillyDirect programme, and enhanced pharmacy delivery services.
“These changes support our plans to grow pharmacy teams this year and help customers continue to receive reliable, high-quality care close to home,” the company said, adding that the investment goes beyond compensation.
“They are about strengthening the care experience in communities across the country while creating clear, long-term career pathways for associates,” Walmart noted, calling pharmacy technicians a critical part of the healthcare ecosystem.
The company clarified that no college degree is required to apply for positions such as pharmacy sales associate, technician, or operations team lead. Walmart also funds certification for pharmacy technicians, with over 22,000 associates having completed certification since 2016.
Pharmacy associates are eligible for Walmart benefits, including affordable medical coverage, 401(k) plans with a 6 per cent company match, paid time off including parental leave, and employee discounts on most store items.
