Shahjahanpur, Feb 8: An accused wanted in connection with an alleged assault and vandalism incident at a hotel here was arrested from Maharashtra’s Satara district while he was reportedly leaving for his honeymoon with his newly-wed wife, police said on Saturday.

Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi said the accused, Akshay Kadam, along with his associates, had assaulted hotel staff and vandalised property at a hotel owned by BJP leader Diwakar Singh at Nagaria Mod under Tilhar police station limits on December 19. The accused had also allegedly misbehaved with police personnel when they reached the spot.

A case was registered against five persons in connection with the incident. While two of the accused were arrested earlier, Akshay Kadam had been absconding, prompting police to launch a search operation.

Meanwhile, a video from a wedding banquet featuring Akshay Kadam went viral on social media on Thursday. Police said his marriage was solemnised at the banquet hall, but he managed to flee before a raid could be conducted, evading arrest once again.

SP Dwivedi said that following a tip-off about his presence in Maharashtra, a police team was dispatched to the state. Akshay was finally arrested on Saturday from Satara district. He will be produced before a local court there, after which police will seek his transfer remand to bring him to Shahjahanpur.

Officials associated with the investigation said the accused was preparing to leave for his honeymoon when he was arrested. Police had earlier announced a cash reward of Rs 25,000 for information leading to his arrest.
