Tejaswin Shankar wins gold as India finish sixth in Asian Indoors

Tianjin, Feb 9: India concluded its campaign at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Tianjin, China, with a total of five medals, finishing sixth in the overall medal standings.

The standout performance for India came from Tejaswin Shankar, who clinched the country’s only gold medal by winning the men’s heptathlon on the final day of the championships. Shankar accumulated 5,993 points to set a new national indoor record, bettering his previous mark of 5,650 points achieved in the United States in 2021.

India added three more medals on the concluding day of the competition. Pooja secured a silver medal in the women’s high jump, Tajinderpal Singh Toor claimed silver in the men’s shot put, while Ancy Sojan bagged a bronze medal in the women’s long jump.

Host nation China dominated the championships, finishing at the top of the medal tally with a total of 34 medals, including 10 gold, 11 silver and 13 bronze.
