Dahod, Feb 17: A joyous Maha Shivratri celebration in Garbada of Dahod district turned tragic after a fire stunt performed during a Shiv Yatra went horribly wrong, claiming the life of a devotee and causing panic among hundreds of spectators.
According to sources, the incident occurred during the religious procession organised as part of Maha Shivratri festivities. A performer allegedly attempted a daredevil act by pouring petrol on himself and setting himself ablaze to entertain the gathering. However, the flames quickly spiralled out of control, creating a dangerous situation in the densely packed crowd.

Ramanbhai Rathod, who was reportedly standing close to the performer, was caught in the sudden blaze. Eyewitnesses stated that the fire spread within seconds, leaving little time for people nearby to react. Visuals that later surfaced on social media showed chaotic scenes, with spectators initially recording the stunt on their mobile phones before panic gripped the area.
Rathod sustained critical burn injuries and was immediately shifted to a private hospital in Dahod. Despite medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves across Garbada and neighbouring areas. Locals have questioned how such a high-risk act was allowed during a crowded religious event and whether adequate safety arrangements were made by the organisers.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the mishap or clarifying whether prior permission had been granted for the fire stunt. Further investigation is awaited.
