Mexico City, Feb 23: The Embassy of India in Mexico on Monday urged Indian nationals living in Mexico to take shelter until further notice following violence, road blockages and flight disruptions after Mexican soldiers killed a top drug cartel leader.

Mexico confirmed on Sunday that security forces had killed Nemesio Oseguera, one of the most wanted drug kingpins in Mexico and the United States.

In its advisory, the Embassy said that due to ongoing security operations and related criminal activity, Indian nationals in Jalisco State — including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala and Guadalajara — Tamaulipas State (Reynosa and other municipalities), as well as parts of Michoacan, Guerrero and Nuevo Leon States, should find a safe place immediately.

The Embassy advised citizens to avoid areas around law enforcement activity, remain alert, avoid crowds and minimise unnecessary movement outside their shelter. They were also asked to follow local news for regular updates.

In a statement posted on X, the Embassy said, “Follow the directions of local authorities and in case of emergency, call 911. Keep family and friends advised of your location and well-being via phone, text and social media.”

The advisory comes amid heightened security operations in several Mexican states following the killing of the cartel leader, which has led to unrest and disruptions in affected regions.
