Dehradun, Feb 24: Mohan Bhagwat, chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has strongly advocated the nationwide implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), modelled on the framework adopted by Uttarakhand, terming it essential for unifying society.

Addressing a gathering of former servicemen on Monday evening as part of the centenary year celebrations of the RSS, Bhagwat said that implementing the UCC across the country would be a “very good thing”.

“It would be good if it happened across the country. I believe it should be implemented in this way (like in Uttarakhand),” he said, referring to the state’s model.

Uttarakhand became the first state in the country to implement the Uniform Civil Code on January 27 last year. Bhagwat noted that before finalising the draft in Uttarakhand, the proposal was opened for public consultation and received suggestions from nearly three lakh people, all of which were examined.

Terming the UCC crucial for fostering social cohesion, the RSS chief maintained that such measures would strengthen national unity.

When asked about the UGC regulations aimed at curbing caste-based discrimination in higher educational institutions — currently stayed by the Supreme Court of India — Bhagwat declined to comment, stating that the matter is sub judice before the apex court.

Speaking at the event attended by veterans as well as serving officers of the military and paramilitary forces, Bhagwat underlined the continued importance of defence forces in safeguarding the nation’s freedom, even in times of peace.

He said the Sangh was founded without external resources and, despite facing severe bans on two occasions, it continued to grow due to society’s self-confidence and support.

Bhagwat also called upon former servicemen to participate in Sangh camps and programmes, observe the work carried out by volunteers and contribute to service activities in line with their interests and capabilities.
