New Delhi, Mar 2 (IANS): Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath Friday said she had urged Home Minister P. Chidambaram on the need to sensitise police officers on cases related to crimes against women.

"I have written to the minister (on) how to handle cases related to crimes against women... Many police officials are not sensitive about women's issues," Tirath told IANS on the sidelines of a function here.

As an example, the minister referred to the case of a recent gang rape in Noida where police revealed the name of the victim.

"The police official was not aware of the rules and regulations," she said.

"I feel we have made strong laws but we still get cases every other day. We need to make the law stronger, and see what changes need to be made in the structure of law. NGOs need to be involved," she said.

A press release issued by Noida police revealed the identity of the 17-year-old girl who was raped in a car by five men last week.

Tirath also referred to the case of two-year-old Falak, who was taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here in January with a fractured skull, bruises and human bite marks.

"The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) is checking exclusively on the Falak case... We are also planning to conduct another meeting exclusively on child trafficking."

Falak, who has undergone five life saving surgeries since Jan 18, is still battling for survival.
