New Delhi, Mar 10: A fresh political confrontation broke out in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday after opposition parties moved a no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla, triggering sharp exchanges between treasury and opposition benches.
The motion has once again brought the spotlight on the long-pending issue of appointing a Deputy Speaker, with opposition leaders claiming that the prolonged vacancy has created a constitutional imbalance in the functioning of the lower house of Parliament.

Senior Indian National Congress leader K. C. Venugopal alleged that the government had failed to appoint a Deputy Speaker for several years, resulting in what he termed a constitutional vacuum in the House.
He argued that the absence of a Deputy Speaker undermines parliamentary conventions and demanded the immediate election of a presiding officer to conduct proceedings during the debate on the resolution.
Leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party strongly rejected the opposition’s allegations, defending the functioning of the House and pushing back against the criticism.
The development has intensified the ongoing standoff between the government and opposition parties in Parliament.
