Panaji, Mar 13: Concerns over flooding and embankment erosion along the Valvanti River were raised in the Goa Legislative Assembly, with several MLAs urging the government to take corrective action to safeguard public safety.

Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao emphasized the need for technical assessments, scientific studies, and hydrological surveys to identify the causes of embankment erosion and implement long-term solutions.

Maem MLA Premendra Shet noted that flooding is largely due to years of neglect in desilting the river, which has reduced its capacity and led to overflow during heavy flows. Poriem MLA Deviya Rane highlighted the risk to NH-748AA at Tulshimal, where erosion from the river’s strong current threatens the road and surrounding areas.

Responding to the concerns, Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar assured the House that the matter will be inspected and desilting work will be undertaken after necessary assessments to prevent further damage.
