St Agnes College conducts fire safety & disaster management training for students

Mangaluru, Mar 16: The Youth Red Cross Unit (YRC) and the Agnes Towards Community (ATC) of St Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru organized a training programme with practical demonstration on fire safety and disaster management on Saturday, March 14 at the Open Air Stage with the objective of creating awareness among students about fire safety and disaster preparedness.

The training session was conducted by officials from the Karnataka Fire and Emergency Services, Pandeshwar Fire Station, Mangaluru. Jaya, assistant fire station officer, along with his team, served as the resource persons for the programme. They explained the common causes of fire accidents, preventive safety measures, and the importance of quick response during emergency situations.

A practical demonstration was conducted where the fire officials showed the correct method of using different types of fire extinguishers to control small fires. Students were also explained the PASS technique (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep) used while operating fire extinguishers. The demonstration further covered safety precautions, evacuation procedures, and the steps to be taken during fire emergencies.

Students actively observed the demonstration and gained practical knowledge about handling fire safety equipment. The session was highly informative and helped students understand the importance of disaster preparedness, safety awareness, and responsible action during emergency situations.

The programme was coordinated by Nimitha K, programme officer – YRC, along with Dr Shailaja H G, co-ordinator – ATC. Dan Charles, final year BCom student, served as the emcee for the programme.

The training programme was a meaningful initiative that equipped students with essential knowledge and practical skills to respond effectively during fire accidents and disaster situations. The session concluded successfully with active participation from students and volunteers.
