Media Release

Mangaluru, Mar 22: Senior Citizen Day celebration, an event honouring the beloved seniors of Bondel parish with love and gratitude was held by Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) on Sunday March 22.

The solemn Mass was presided over by Msgr Maxim Noronha, vicar general of the diocese of Mangalore, and concelebrated by Fr Andrew Leo D'Souza, parish priest.

In his homily, Msgr Maxim reflected on the Gospel of John 11:1–45, drawing attention to the deep faith of Martha even in moments of sorrow. He reminded the faithful that the Lenten season is not just a time of observance, but a call to true inner conversion and preparation for Easter. At times, we may feel spiritually lifeless, like closed tombs, yet Christ continues to call us out of darkness into new life. Just as Lazarus was raised from the dead, we too are invited to leave behind our old ways, renew our faith, and walk in the light and life that Jesus offers.

The liturgy was meaningfully led by the senior citizens, and the adult choir added beauty and devotion to the celebration through their hymns. Special prayers were offered for all the faithful, especially the sick, and the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick was administered to those gathered.

At the end of the Mass, Fr Andrew expressed his gratitude to Msgr Maxim for celebrating the Eucharist and for his inspiring homily shared with the parish community.

After the Mass, a short programme was conducted in the church pendol. The programme began with a prayer hymn sung by Irene Dias and Jasmine. Prakash Pinto warmly welcomed all the guests on the dais. The dignitaries were honoured and welcomed with flowers by the members of the SVP.

Those present on the dais were Msgr Maxim Noronha, Fr Andrew Leo D'Souza, Fr Lawrence assistant priest, Fr Peter Gonsalves - principal St Lawrence Eng Med School, John D’Silva - vice president PPC, Alwyn Saldanha - PPC secretary, Prakash Pinto - president, and Gratian Lobo -secretary, SVP.

Msgr Maxim Noronha, the guest of honour, in his message expressed his gratitude to the SVP members for inviting him. He appreciated the noble mission of the Society of St Vincent de Paul, highlighting how, though small in number, its members render commendable service to the poor and the needy across the world. He encouraged everyone to continue this spirit of charity and compassion.

He also extended his heartfelt wishes to all the senior citizens, praying for their good health, long life, and a deep trust in the Lord. His message inspired all present to live with faith, hope, and a spirit of service.

Fr Andrew Leo D'Souza, in his presidential address, said that senior citizens are valuable assets of the parish, who have lovingly nurtured and sacrificed for their children. He urged the younger generation to show care, love, and concern for their elders, especially in their old age, and not to abandon them.

He expressed his appreciation to the Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) for organizing the programme. He also encouraged the faithful to support their upcoming project of building houses for the needy, as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of SVP at Bondel.

A joyful cake-cutting ceremony was held as a token of love and appreciation, as those celebrating their birthdays in the month of March were invited to the dais, with the dignitaries joining in the celebration.

Grace before the meal was led by Fr Lawrence. The programme was compered by Dr Roshan Fernandes, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Gratian Lobo, secretary.

Ronald Lasrado, Jasmine, and Dr Roshan entertained the gathering with old songs, bringing back nostalgic memories.

Food was served to all gathered, reflecting a beautiful sense of bonding and togetherness. Special care was taken to attend to the needs of the senior citizens, making the programme well-organized and truly memorable.
