Himanta Biswa Sarma targets Congress, announces welfare push ahead of Assam polls

Guwahati, Mar 24: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday launched a strong political attack on the Indian National Congress following the rejection of its candidates’ nominations, while also unveiling a series of development initiatives and welfare promises ahead of the elections.

Reacting sharply to the controversy, Sarma took a swipe at the opposition, saying that if Congress leaders were dissatisfied, they could “go and contest elections in Pakistan,” sparking a fresh political row.

The remarks came after the Election Commission of India rejected the nominations of three Congress candidates during scrutiny. Despite the criticism, Sarma maintained that the process was strictly procedural and based on established rules.

“I do not want anyone’s nomination to be rejected. However, if forms are filled incorrectly, they will be rejected as per the law,” he said, emphasising that scrutiny is conducted in line with Election Commission guidelines.

The Chief Minister also indicated that eviction drives would be carried out in parts of Barpeta district after the elections, reiterating the government’s commitment to removing encroachments.

On the development front, Sarma announced plans to construct a new flyover in Bhawanipur to improve traffic flow and connectivity. He stressed that infrastructure development remains a key focus of the state government.

In a move aimed at supporting unemployed youth, he also promised financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh to eligible individuals to promote self-reliance and livelihood opportunities.

Reaffirming his government’s agenda, Sarma said the BJP-led administration is focused on development and governance, and called on voters to back the party in the upcoming elections.
