Karkala, Mar 25: Heavy rain accompanied by thunder and gusty winds caused significant damage in Shirlalu, Andaru, and Ajekar regions on the evening of Tuesday, March 24. The sudden weather shift resulted in several trees being uprooted and over 20 electric poles crashing down.

The region, which had been witnessing light showers over the past few days, experienced intense winds on Tuesday evening, leading to widespread destruction. At Kondalike on the Andaru-Kaduhole main road, massive trees fell across the road, snapping power lines and bringing traffic to a complete standstill. Local residents, along with Mescom and revenue department officials, worked together to clear the debris and restore access.

Damage to property

In Andaru Jagadamba, a tree fell onto the house of a resident named Suresh, causing partial damage to the structure. A young woman who was inside the house at the time sustained minor injuries.

Further damage was reported near the power substation on the Ajekar-Andaru main road, where a fallen tree disrupted traffic for several hours. On the Ajekar Vishnumurthy Temple road, trees collapsed onto power lines, pulling down several electric poles onto the street. Additionally, the roof of a passenger bus shelter at Guddeyangadi in Ajekar was blown away by the strong winds, resulting in its total destruction.

Mescom faces heavy losses

The Mescom department has reportedly incurred a loss of approximately Rs 4 lac in the Shirlalu, Andaru, and Kaduhole areas alone, where more than 20 electric poles were uprooted. Heavy rainfall was also reported in Kerwashe, Mala, Nooralbettu, and Bajagoli.

The destruction of poles and lines caused a total power outage across various parts of Karkala and Hebri taluks. As a precautionary measure and due to technical faults, power supply was temporarily suspended in several areas. Mescom personnel are currently working on-site to repair the damage and restore electricity.
