Guwahati, Mar 29: Union home minister Amit Shah launched a scathing attack on the Congress party during an election rally in Dhekiajuli, asserting that BJP-led governments at both the Centre and in Assam have transformed the state through massive financial investments, infrastructure growth, and the restoration of peace.
Shah claimed that while Assam received around Rs 1.28 lac crore during 10 years of Congress-led central rule, the state benefited from nearly Rs 9 lac crore under the leadership of Narendra Modi between 2014 and 2024. “This reflects the Centre’s unwavering commitment to Assam’s development,” he said.

He highlighted key initiatives, including the establishment of a semiconductor plant in Assam and efforts by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to set up medical and engineering colleges in every district.
Shah also took credit for restoring peace in the state, noting that nearly 10,000 youths laid down arms following multiple peace accords. He contrasted this with the Congress era, when Assam reportedly experienced frequent violence and bomb blasts.
Targeting the opposition, Shah questioned Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Gaurav Gogoi over their alleged opposition to removing illegal infiltrators from voter lists. “They must clarify whether they stand with infiltrators or the people of Assam,” he said.
Cultural achievements also featured in his speech, with Shah noting that legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika was awarded the Bharat Ratna only under Modi’s leadership. He added that Assam’s first Chief Minister, Gopinath Bordoloi, had been historically overlooked for the honour due to political reasons.
Emphasising national security, Shah claimed that BJP policies ensure that “not an inch of India’s land” can be encroached upon, contrasting the current government’s stance with past Congress-era lapses. “Jawaharlal Nehru had said 'Tata bye-bye' to Assam during the time of the China war. This is the Modi government today; no one can snatch even an inch of India's land,” he asserted.
