Water woes persist in Canacona despite presence of two dams

Canacona, Mar 31: Even with the Chapoli Dam and Gaunem Dam in place, several parts of Canacona continue to struggle with erratic water supply during the summer, leaving residents increasingly dependent on water tankers.

Local authorities acknowledge that the situation has become challenging for many households. Shivraj Deshmukh, deputy sarpanch of Shristhal panchayat, said residents are facing significant hardship due to the inconsistent supply, especially those managing tight daily routines.

Officials from the water resources department stated that Chapoli Dam serves as the main water source for the taluka. Meanwhile, Gaunem Dam—located in Gaondongrim village—was developed as a smaller irrigation project to cater to areas such as Gaondongrim, Cotigao, and parts of Poinguinim.

Despite these facilities, villagers say the supply remains insufficient. In many areas, tap water is available only for a limited number of hours each day, with residents alleging that long-standing supply issues have yet to be effectively addressed by the authorities.
