London, March 7 (IANS): British ambassador to Syria Simon Collis, who was withdrawn from Damascus recently, said here that there was no plan for Britain to arm the Syrian opposition groups.
Asked about his position on arming the rebels during a TV interview with Sky News, Collis said: "We are not doing that and we don't plan to."
Britain was "looking to work with countries like Russia and China" to "tackle the humanitarian situation" in Syria, the ambassador said.
London would operate "within organisations like the Security Council" as well as the European Union, Xinhua quoted Collis as saying.
Collis and his staff left Syria Feb 29 due to "deterioration of the security situation in Damascus". The British embassy in Syria has been temporarily suspended.
