Mangaluru, Apr 1: KMC Hospital Mangaluru inaugurated its newly renovated Radiodiagnosis Department along with the installation of a high-speed 128-Slice CT Scanner and Advanced Mammography Unit on Wednesday, April 1. The facility was inaugurated by Dr H S Ballal.
The upgraded department brings together advanced diagnostic imaging technologies supported by a multidisciplinary team of specialists, offering integrated services under one roof. The initiative aims to enhance diagnostic accuracy, improve patient care, and enable faster clinical decision-making.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr H S Ballal said that the department has a long-standing legacy and he had the opportunity to be part of its early journey nearly three decades ago as a radiologist. He noted that the department has evolved from modest beginnings into a highly advanced radiodiagnosis facility, reflecting the institution’s commitment to innovation, academic excellence, and high standards of patient care.
He added that the integration of modern imaging technologies would further strengthen early diagnosis and clinical outcomes, especially in detecting serious and non-communicable diseases, including malignancies.
Dr Ballal emphasized that early diagnosis plays a key role in better treatment and recovery and expressed confidence that the new facility would greatly benefit patients in the future.
Dr Santhosh Rai, head of radiology, said that the renovation marks a significant step forward in delivering precise, timely, and patient-centric diagnostic services. The upgraded department is equipped with high-end imaging facilities including 1.5T MRI, 128-slice CT scanner, advanced mammography, digital X-ray, ultrasound, Doppler, fetal medicine, and interventional radiology, all within a single dedicated department, enabling faster diagnosis and coordinated patient care.
He also highlighted the importance of early disease detection, stating that regular mammography screening can reduce breast cancer mortality by 25–30% in women above 40 years of age. Advanced CT technology will also help in early screening for heart disease through coronary artery calcium scoring and CT coronary angiography.
Pramod Kunder, Cluster Director, said that the upgraded department reflects the hospital’s continued commitment to world-class infrastructure and improved healthcare delivery. He added that patient-centric services such as Sunday OPD, Evening OPD, and Emergency Medicine will benefit from the 24/7 scanning and reporting services.
