New Delhi, Apr 1: On Wednesday, digital payment platforms across India experienced significant disruptions, leaving numerous users unable to complete transactions via UPI.

Data from outage monitoring site Downdetector showed a sharp spike in complaints, suggesting a widespread technical issue. Among the banks affected, State Bank of India (SBI) faced the brunt, with over 500 outage reports, while UCO Bank recorded around 40 complaints. UPI-related downtime reports also crossed 40, with the numbers rising steadily as more users reported problems.

The disruption spanned multiple cities, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jaipur, and Pune. SBI users in Kolkata, Guwahati, and Chennai also reported failed transactions, while UCO Bank issues were mostly reported from New Delhi, Jaipur, and Kolkata.

Many users took to X to describe the glitches, with complaints ranging from failed payments and transactions getting stuck midway to UPI apps failing to load entirely. Some users were unsure whether the problem lay with their bank or their personal devices.

In response, SBI confirmed on social media that a scheduled maintenance had been extended until 12:30 pm on April 1. The bank cautioned that services including UPI, IMPS, YONO, internet banking, NEFT, and RTGS might be affected during this period.

SBI advised customers to use alternatives such as UPI Lite, the eRupee (CBDC) app, and ATM services. The public lender also apologized for the inconvenience, stating, “We regret the inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding.”
