US army chief Gen Randy George asked to step down amid Iran conflict

Daijiworld Media Network - Washington

Washington, Apr 3: Randy George, Chief of Staff of the US Army, has been asked to step down and take immediate retirement by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, amid the ongoing US conflict with Iran.

The Pentagon confirmed that Hegseth had directed the Army’s top uniformed officer to relinquish his position. The move comes as the administration of Donald Trump continues efforts to reshape military leadership in line with its national security priorities.

According to reports, discussions are also underway regarding possible exits of key officials including Kash Patel, Daniel Driscoll, and Lori Chavez-DeRemer, although no final decision has been taken.

Hegseth has already overseen the removal of several top generals and admirals since assuming office, marking a significant overhaul within the Pentagon. Among those previously removed were Lisa Franchetti and Charles Q. Brown Jr..

Gen George’s exit adds to the ongoing churn in military leadership. His deputy, James Mingus, was also replaced earlier, with Lt Gen Christopher LaNeve nominated to the role.

An infantry officer and a graduate of the United States Military Academy, George has served in the Gulf War as well as in Iraq and Afghanistan. He assumed office as Army Chief in 2023, a position that typically carries a four-year term.

His removal marks the latest development in a broader restructuring of US military leadership during a period of heightened geopolitical tensions.
