Bengal hostage row: AIMIM leader arrested, termed ‘mastermind’ of Malda protest

Kolkata, Apr 3: The West Bengal Police on Friday arrested Mofakkerul Islam in connection with the Malda hostage row, where several officials were allegedly gheraoed for over nine hours.

Islam, an advocate by profession and a leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), has been named as the “mastermind” behind the protests that took place a night earlier. He had also contested the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections from Itahar.

According to police, Islam was apprehended at Bagdogra Airport while allegedly attempting to flee the state.

The protests in Malda reportedly escalated into a tense situation, with Special Intensive Revision (SIR) officers being surrounded and held for several hours, prompting swift action from authorities. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
