Marriage lure fraud: jeweller ends life in Pune; woman booked

Pune, Apr 5: A young jeweller allegedly died by suicide in the Pune city after being emotionally distressed over an alleged fraud under the pretext of marriage, police said.

The incident took place in the Fursungi area, where the 29-year-old businessman reportedly hanged himself inside his jewellery shop on March 6. A case has now been registered against a woman for abetment to suicide.

According to police, the deceased had come in contact with the accused through the social media platform Instagram in November last year. The woman allegedly gained his trust and entered into a relationship, promising marriage.

Officials said she reportedly took advantage of his emotions and received valuables from him, including a gold ring worth ?50,000, expensive dresses and gifts. However, she later began avoiding meetings and distancing herself, leading to mental distress for the victim.

Police added that the accused also allegedly claimed she was suffering from cancer to gain sympathy.

Unable to cope with the situation, the man took the extreme step. Initially, an accidental death report was registered, but during the investigation, a detailed suicide note was recovered, in which the victim reportedly mentioned emotional trauma and betrayal.

Based on the findings, police have registered a case against the woman and further investigation is underway.
